Year 2000 to 2030 projections (compiled by Aswin Suri from US Census 2000 data)
California will still remain ranked as number 1 as far as total population, but will drop to a 37.1% increase in population compared to Florida at almost 80% increase in population from 2000 to 2030. Florida population is increasing from 15 million to 28 million.
Interesting that District of Columbia in the same period will actually have a drastic drop of total population by almost 40%
Nevada, Arizona, and Florida will rank 1 to 3 for the top 3 states as far a population increases.
In 2000, each of the nation’s 50 states had more people under 18 than 65 and older. In fact, in about half of the states, the ratio was more than two to one. In 2030, Florida is projected to have more people 65 and older than under 18:
As the oldest baby boomers become senior citizens in 2011, the population 65 and older is projected to grow faster than the total population in every state. Florida is projected to double its 65- and-older population between 2000 and 2030. That means that more than one in every four residents will be age 65 and older in 2030 in Florida.
US population is expected to increase from 281 million to 363 million with almost 8% of the total population of the USA residing in Florida. That does not include all of those holding second homes in Florida. My projection is that almost 1/4 of all USA residents may have either their home in Florida or a second home in Florida by 2030. If you rule out all those folks that are under socioeconomic hardship; that equates to 50% of all “white collar” Amerians will own a home in Florida.
Despite last year's spate of Hurricanes, Florida was the Top Magnet State of 2004, a testament to its reputation as a great place to work and play. The Sunshine State experienced the largest net relocation gain (inbound moves minus outbound moves) in the country.
Despite the hurricanes, people realize that storms are the exception rather than the rule. Our temperate climate and favorable business environment combine to make Florida a great place to live and work, and that far outweighs most other concerns.
It may come as no surprise that even though Florida housing is very affordable compared to California, there are so many millionaires either moving to Florida or buying second homes in Florida that Florida has now jumped to number 3 in the USA rankings for the most million dollar homes. Florida edged out Connecticut to round out the top 3 as California, New York, and Florida. By the time the next census will be released for 2010, its quite possible that New York maybe bumped from second place to third. Since Florida's in-migration is now almost triple that of California, its quite possible that by 2020, Florida will outrank California and New York as first place.
Investors and relocators are now realizing that Volusia county (Daytona Beach Area) is the least expensive county in Florida.
Florida inbound versus outbound trends
Florida experienced 10,722 inbound shipments compared to 8,987 outbound shipments for a net relocation gain of 1,735 last year. Its 19,709 shipments also made it the second most mobile state behind California.
The second most popular state was Arizona, which had a net relocation gain of 1,451 out of 8,603 total shipments. North Carolina was next, followed by Georgia.
For the second year in a row, the most mobile states -- those with the most inbound and outbound moves combined -- were California with 21,288 total shipments, Florida with 19,709 and Texas with 15,232.
